Mayo scissors are heavy-duty surgical scissors with narrowed but blunt pointed blades, which may be straight or curved.

Features

They may be made from stainless steel or titanium and have a polished or brushed finish. Mayo scissors are available in standard or extra-long sizes.

The Mayo style of surgical scissors has semi-blunt ends. Although the ends are the same on both scissor halves, this isn’t the case with many other medical scissors. The Metzenbaum surgical scissor also has matching ends and is close in style to Mayo scissors, but its handles are longer. The Metzenbaum’s middle section is slightly narrower as well.

Uses

Straight-bladed Mayo scissors are designed for cutting body tissues near the surface of the wound. As the straight Mayo scissor is also used for cutting sutures, or stitches, it’s also sold as suture scissors. Many surgeons use separate pairs of straight-bladed Mayo scissors for tissue and suture cutting since using the scissor on sutures tends to dull its blades.

Curved-bladed Mayo scissor styles allow deeper penetration into the wound than the type with straight blades. The curved style of Mayo scissor is used to cut thick tissues such as those found in the uterus, muscles, breast and foot. Mayo scissors used for dissection are placed in tissue with the tips closed. The scissors are then opened so that the tips open and spread out the tissue during the dissection process.

Mayo scissors are especially associated with cutting fascia. Fascia is a tri-layered, connective tissue located between skin and muscles.

Metzenbaum scissors are surgical scissors designed for cutting delicate tissue. They are not only most commonly used for cutting tissue, but they are only designed to be used for that purpose. Because of their specific function, they are sometimes called Metzenbaum dissecting scissors.

Metzenbaum Scissors are sometimes called Metz. The scissor was named after after the American surgeon who designed them. Myron Firth Metzenbaum, M.D.

Features

The scissors come in variable lengths and have a relatively long handle-to-blade ratio. The blades can be either sharp or blunt, but the tips are always blunt. Most Metzenbaum scissors ranges in length from 5.5 inches (about 14 cm) to 14 inches (about 35.6 cm). So-called baby Metzenbaum scissors are only about 4.5 inches (about 11.4 cm) long, considerably smaller than the standard size. The baby size usually makes them more effective for the most delicate procedures.

Uses

The Metz is specifically designed for cutting delicate tissue.

Dissecting scissors are widely used in hospitals and health care units for any surgical procedure. It is designed for separating tissues. They are to be used with caution, because it is much more sharper than the usual scissors.

Types of dissecting scissors

Dissecting scissors may have curved or straight blades. The straight scissors have very sharp tips. The two sharp point blades in the dissecting scissors find great use where any dissection work is needed or in professional laboratory or in any home. The curved scissors are more preferred by the surgeons for dissecting as they provide better vision of the operated area. The tips of scissors are also used to spread and probe the area of incision. The smaller sizes are used at the surface, the larger sizes deeper in the cavities. This curved blades have tips that are rounded to avoid possible damage to structures during dissection.

Examples of a Dissecting Scissor include Mayo scissors, and Metzenbaum scissors.

Features of dissecting scissors

Aids in Smooth operation.

Engineered and designed for proper tension.

Correct tension, combined with blade sharpness in such scissors results in quality cutting every time.
