Sagittal plane

The Sagittal Plane (Lateral Plane) is a vertical plane running from front to back. It divides the body or any of its parts into right and left sides. It is perpendicular to the transverse and coronal planes. It can be in the center of the body and divide it into two equal parts, or away from the midline and divide it into unequal parts.

It is also known as the antero-posterior axis or Y-Z plane. This line runs from front to back through the center of the body. When the sagittal plane runs down the midline of the body, dividing it into equal halves, it is called mid-sagittal plane or median plane.
